I wonder how that works?

We were given some old keyboards and telephones. We wondered what was inside them that made them work. We used some screwdrivers to open them up. We found special buttons and a a switchboard. Hunter said the power goes in there and makes it work. We wonder if we can put it back together?

Water and music!

Today at Discovery Time water, jars and forks were put out. We wondered what would happen if you carefully hit the jars with the fork and also what would happen if we had water in the jars. Josh spent some time experimenting and then said "Look everyone, I can play a tune!"

Discovery in Room 5. 4 November 2013.

A group of children were very intrigued with the objects in a water trough.  The children talked about how some of the objects were floating and some were sinking.  We wondered why some things float and some sink.

Some of the children gave their thoughts on why things float and some sink.

Then we decided we needed to get the opinion of an expert!!

KITES

A group of children were interested in making a kite at discovery time. Some of our wonderings were
What will we need?-Micaela R2
What will make a good kite? Elise R2
I wonder what a kite needs to fly well? Amelia R2

We decided to investigate these wonderings over the next few weeks and to make a kite of course!!!!!

Discovery in Room 3 (Monday 21st October)

Welcome to Discovery in Room 3!

Today, Miss Munford read us a story called, "Use Nice Words."  It taught us about using nice words instead of using bad or mean words.

We then did a toothpaste activity.  One student from each class had to squirt out all of the toothpaste.  The toothpaste represented the bad words or mean words we can sometimes say.  They then had to try put all of the toothpaste back into the tube.

This was very hard!

Miss Munford told us that once the toothpaste comes out of the tube, you cannot get it all back in.  This is much like a put-down or rude comment.  Once a put-down comes out of my mouth and goes into your ears, I cannot take it back.

The message was, "Your thoughts are private, but behaviour is public."  Also, the next time you think about giving a put down, think again and screw your lid to your toothpaste tube on tight!

Have a look at some photos of us all in Room 3, doing the toothpaste activity and, marble-run making...

Transport

In Room One today, during Discovery Time, we discovered how to make paper planes and boats. Once we had made them we tested them. We also had turns directing the 'Bee Bots' around the floor. Here are some pictures of our discoveries.
