Discovery Time Today

Today in the junior school it was just like christmas! We learnt how to wrap presents and make them look gorgeous. What do you think?

Making Compliments!

We have been noticing people making compliments about other peoples work in discovery. We say "Thank you" when someone pays us a compliment.

Perseverance with Fairy Bread in Room 3

We were using our spreading, cutting and sharing skills in Room 3 to make Fairy Bread on Monday the 14th of May 2012. We needed to persevere and keep trying to spread our butter right out to the edges and to keep moving our knife backward and forward to cut our bread. We were fantastic at cutting equal shares and sprinkling our hundreds and thousands carefully all over our slice of bread. And what would you know - Everyone loved the taste of our fairy bread!!!

More stacking cups

Miss Sweeney really persevered today to understand the rules and get faster at cup stacking. You were really clever Miss Sweeney and your friend.

Well done Kayla, you never gave up. You persevered the whole of discovery time and at the end of discovery you were so fast!! Good girl. I wonder what you will do next week with the stacking cups?

We had a special guest come into room 4 today at Discovery Time so we could see how an expert did cup stacking. Ratorua and Ramonjot from Room 20 came in to show us how to do it. He is very clever and we all thought 

it was much harder to do than it looks.

Wow! At Discovery on Monday the 7th of May 2012 there was a lot of perseverance in the sandpit. A group of children worked creatively for a long time to make a huge sandcastle. It took a long time to sieve the small sand from the big sand. There was some wonderful creations and loads of really neat sharing going on. What fun!

Discovery time - 3 March 2012 - 'Sharing'.

This week it was Mrs Brown's turn to take Discovery.  She talked about 'sharing' and read us a book about this.  We talked about all the ways we could share equipment and what to do if someone wouldn't share with us.  We also watched this clip about sharing.

We had to share the apples, peelers and knives when we were peeling the apples.

We have been bringing boxes and other treasures from home to make things with at discovery time.

We love dressing up!

Our First Day - 'Using nice words'.

I was so happy to be the first teacher today to introduce our discovery time. Today we were learning to use nice words like 'please, thank you, excuse me and sorry' while we were having fun. 

We watched a movie clip of Barney's song "Please and Thank you" in room 4 before we were allowed to go and choose our activities... Here it is.


The activities that we were allowed to choose from today were...

• playdough
• trains
• keyboards, cellphones, phones and paper.
• lego
• floor puzzles
• balls and frisbees
• making table with boxes, wool and magazines
• shell rubbings

I heard lots of children using nice words today when they were speaking to other people. We had fun and all worked together really well to tidy up at the end too. I can't wait for next Monday's discovery time.
